The Future of Company Culture is Bionic
How AI fixes culture | Interesting Stuff this week | Up Up Down on The Adapt Podcast
Companies live or die on culture.
We know that strong, positive cultures lead to more engaged, productive and innovative companies.
But, culture has a scale problem.
Traditionally we hired for technical ability first and cultural fit second, if at all.
As headcount grows, this compounds and then one day all that remains of a company’s culture is what the company says it is.
So, how do we fix this?
We call it, The ‘Bionic Employee’ – it’s our thesis on how to rethink hiring and team building that leverages the best of both human potential and AI.
The Bionic Employee Thesis
People are overestimating AI in general, abstract terms. No, AI is not likely to become our overlord.
But, people are underestimating AI for specific, specialised tasks.
Many of the tasks that constitute ‘knowledge work’ will more effectively be done, in the first instance by humans augmented with AI, and then by AI that may employ humans for the parts it can’t do [more on that in a future release].
This means that AI will significantly erode large swathes of work.
If the way we work is changing, hiring naturally follows.
The Bionic Employee thesis is a smarter way to build your team.
At its core, the Bionic Employee Thesis proposes a shift in how we approach hiring and team development:
Hire primarily for cultural fit and core competencies;
Augment your employees' abilities with AI tools to cover technical gaps.
This approach might seem counterintuitive at first.
After all, shouldn't we be hiring the most technically skilled individuals we can find?
Not necessarily, and here's why this matters:
Why Cultural Fit Takes Center Stage
Think about the last high-performing team you were part of. What made it special?
Chances are, it wasn't just about individual skills, but how well you all worked together.
High-performing teams thrive on cultural alignment.
When team members share values, communication styles, and work ethics, they're more likely to collaborate effectively and push each other to greater heights.
This alignment creates a positive feedback loop, fostering innovation and driving the company forward.
The Headcount Dilemma
In many organizations, limited headcount forces a difficult choice between cultural fit and technical expertise.
Do you hire the coding wizard who might ruffle some feathers or the great communicator who needs to brush up on their technical skills?
But what if you didn't have to choose?
AI = The Great Equalizer
This is where AI enters the picture.
With rapid advancements in AI, we can now bridge technical gaps without expanding our teams.
This allows us to prioritize cultural fit in our hiring decisions, knowing that AI can help colour in the technical blanks.

A Real-World Example
Let me share an example from our personal experience building Other Stuff.
We’ve had plenty of exciting and impactful product ideas over the years, however, we faced a common challenge. We could only get so far with our existing skills and hiring a development team wasn’t an option.
We prefer a bootstrapped approach to building companies.
We prioritise free cash flow over growth at all costs.
We believe in taking profit, not venture capital.
These are some of our values, it’s part of the culture we’re baking into Other Stuff.
These values might have been luxuries in the past.
But, now it’s different.
With the help of AI, Pete learned how to code in just a few weeks.
This newfound skill, enabled by AI, allowed him to build the tools and products we needed and use every day at Other Stuff.
I’m using AI to write, design and market with greater speed, clarity and velocity than was ever possible in the past.
This means we're now bringing our ideas to life, all without expanding our team.
The Benefits of the Bionic Employee Approach
So, why does this matter? Adopting the Bionic Employee approach can offer numerous benefits for small businesses:
Focus on Cultural Alignment: By prioritizing cultural fit in hiring, you can build teams that are more cohesive, motivated, and aligned with your company's values and mission.
Flexibility in Skill Development: Use AI tools to fill skill and technical gaps as they arise, allowing your team to adapt quickly to new challenges and opportunities.
Reduced Training Costs: With AI augmentation, you can potentially reduce the time and resources spent on extensive technical training programs.
Improved Time-to-Productivity: New hires can contribute meaningfully to your organization faster, as they're already aligned culturally and can leverage AI tools to support their work.
Innovation: When employees are empowered with AI tools, they can push beyond their traditional limitations, leading to increased creativity and problem-solving capabilities.
There are also process and administration pain points to identify within your business.
Once you start to explore how to optimise processes, streamline administration, improve customer experiences, and generate leads using AI, [something we’re helping a small number of clients with over at Studio] you start to wonder:
a. Maybe we don’t need that ‘next hire’; or
b. We need a small, nimble team perfectly aligned on culture to meet the transformative challenge of AI.
The Bionic Future of Work
Imagine a workplace where every employee is a perfect cultural fit, bringing their unique human qualities – creativity, emotional intelligence, and critical thinking – to the table.
Now imagine these same employees augmented with AI tools that fill in any technical gaps, allowing them to tackle complex challenges and bring ideas to life.
This is the promise of the Bionic Employee approach: a team of empowered, aligned individuals who combine the best of human capabilities with AI-powered tools.
The result is a workforce that's more adaptable, more innovative, and more capable of driving your organization forward in an increasingly complex business landscape.
Implementing the Bionic Employee Approach
So what is the best way to implement the Bionic Employee approach in your company?
Operational Improvements: Seek out how to gain operational efficiencies, save time, and increase margins in the short term with AI.
Invest in the right AI stack: Research and invest in AI tools that can augment your employees' capabilities in key areas.
Reassess Your Hiring Criteria: Shift your focus towards cultural fit and core competencies that align with your company's values and long-term goals.
Foster a Learning Culture: Encourage your team to embrace AI and continuous learning, creating an environment where adapting and growing with technology is the norm.
Measure and Iterate: Keep track of how this approach impacts your team's performance, satisfaction, and innovation. Be prepared to adjust your strategy as you learn what works best for your company.
The Shift in Human Roles
As machines and AI take over more operations, the role of humans will inevitably change.
In the near term, new jobs will emerge for people to design augmented and automated processes and improve them over time.
Over the medium to longer term, we may see a fundamental shift in the nature of work – from processes operated by humans to processes designed and audited by humans.
Capturing value from this shift will require a massive redesign of legacy business processes to enable humans and machines to work together.
This is where many traditional businesses struggle, while digital natives can design for this sort of integration from the start.
A New Way of Working
Building and managing bionic processes requires a fundamentally new way of working.
These processes are most rapidly created and built by multidisciplinary teams that are tasked with a goal or an outcome and are empowered to find the best way to achieve it.
These teams have a product owner and a clear mission, and they work with an agile methodology.
As we move further into the age of AI, the concept of the Bionic Employee offers an exciting new paradigm for building and developing high-performing teams.
By focusing on cultural fit and leveraging AI to fill skill gaps, we can create workplaces that are not just more productive, but also more fulfilling.
